The ESA Education Office is excited to announce the second “lessons learned” workshop on ESEO, its spacecraft mission developed in collaboration with student teams from across Europe.

University students are invited to apply to take part in the workshop, where they will meet and learn from engineers and scientists from ESA, SITAEL, and university teams directly involved in the ESEO project.

The European Student Earth Orbiter (ESEO) is an ESA educational satellite project for university students across Europe. Launched in December of 2018, the 50 kg satellite consists of payloads and subsystems developed by ten student teams from across Europe, hosted on the SITAEL S-50 platform. ESEO carried out its mission and is now no longer in operation. However, opportunities for learning experiences rooted in the project still widely exist, both through the evaluation of lessons learned throughout the project, and by making use of its avionics test bench that is still available on the ground.

The workshop will be jointly organized by ESA and SITAEL and is scheduled to take place virtually from 19-21 October 2021. Students will learn from engineers and scientists who had a hand in building and operating ESEO. They will first be made familiar with the anatomy of the satellite and its subsystems, to subsequently dive deeper into the following topics:

  • ESEO mission chronicle
  • Lessons learned from the development and operations of ESEO
  • ESEO’s anomalies and results: case studies
  • Ground segment: design and performance
  • Examination of student developed payloads
  • Virtual operations scenario using the ESEO Avionics Test Bench
  • Virtual tour of the ESEO ground station

The ESEO Inflight Experience Workshop will provide students the opportunity to meet with experts in the space industry and to become familiar with the details of a challenging educational space project.
