Adrianos Golemis
Adrianos Golemis was born in 1987 in Greece.
Education
Adrianos graduated in Medicine from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2012. He then completed a Master's degree in Space Studies at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France, in 2013. He later attended short courses in Aviation Medicine at King's College London, United Kingdom, and completed the Developing Emerging Leaders programme at INSEAD, France.
He speaks Greek, English, French and German.
Experience
In 2013, Adrianos joined ESA's Space Medicine Team for a research internship at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. Between 2013 and 2015, he spent 14 months at Concordia Station in Antarctica, supporting European research into human physiology and psychology in isolated and extreme environments.
In 2015, Adrianos completed his mandatory military service, including eight months of clinical practice as a medical doctor with the 32ndMarines Brigade stationed in Volos, Greece. He subsequently joined MEDES, the French Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology, where he worked on bed-rest and dry-immersion studies simulating the effects of spaceflight on the human body. He also worked medically as an intern, in the departments of Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Neurology in Greek and French hospitals.
From 2018 to 2024, Adrianos served as a Flight Surgeon supporting ESA astronauts before, during and after missions to the International Space Station. During this period, he also went through ESA's 2021-2022 Astronaut Selection. Between 2024 and 2026, he held the position of Lead Flight Surgeon within ESA's Space Medicine Team.
Alongside his operational work, Adrianos has contributed to research, education and science communication through university teaching, public lectures and media appearances. He enjoys astrophotography, running, and diving, and holds a Private Pilot License. He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and The Explorers Club.
Astronaut activities
On 1 September 2026, Adrianos joined ESA as a Project Astronaut. His assignment is part of an agreement signed by ESA and Vast on behalf of Greece to support a future private astronaut mission. He became the first Greek citizen to begin astronaut training at ESA's European Astronaut Centre and is preparing for a future mission in low Earth orbit.
