This activity was approved by the Aurora Board of Participants within the Work Plan 2005-2006 and should be initiated by the end of 2005.

The Safe Haven system level study (phase A study of an inflatable habitation system) has been initiated with a broad application in mind. However it is foreseen that during the course of the preparatory exploration studies some aspects might change due to new boundary conditions arising from the future definitions of the European explorations strategy, specifically as a result of other scenario studies, such as Moon exploration, that will be performed within the same work plan.

During the execution of the defined system studies, a better detailed definition of the future habitation needs will be achieved. Additional tasks, which are not covered by the Safe Haven study, will be identified needing more analysis prior to the Ministerial Council in December 2005.

Specific issues will need further study:

  • Interfaces to other mission elements such as launchers, surface vehicles, orbiters, etc.
  • Necessary demonstration missions along with ways to implement them
  • Better definition of the habitation system for the proposed mission

In addition there are some aspects not included in the Space Haven study including:

  • Lunar environment mapping (known data vs. necessary data resulting in identification of delta to be collected via precursor missions) to identify potential outpost on the Moon
  • Specific radiation analysis (radiation environment, radiation countermeasures, safety, etc.) that will help design the habitation module
  • Architectural aspects of the Lunar habitation module
