1908: On 30 June 1908, over the skies of Tunguska in Russia, a meteorite no less than 50 metres in diameter travelling at approximately 100 000 kilometres per hour penetrated Earth's atmosphere.

It became heated to approximately 10 000ÂșC and detonated between six and ten kilometres above the ground. The blast released 10-50 megatons of energy, destroying 2200 square kilometres of forest, leaving no trace of life.

The Tunguska rock came out of the Taurid Meteor storm that crosses Earth's orbit twice a year during the period 24 June to 6 July and the period 3 November to 15 November.
