Space and Belgium

Belgium’s space sector combines scientific expertise with strong capabilities in satellite systems, software, telecommunications, Earth observation, instruments and space-based applications. Belgian companies and research organisations contribute to ESA missions and programmes by developing technologies and services for spacecraft, scientific research and the use of satellite data. Belgium is also home to ESA’s European Space Security and Education Centre (ESEC) in Redu, which forms part of the Agency’s ground station network and specialises in operating small satellites and sensitive, security-related activities. The ESEC-Galaxia site additionally supports ESA’s education and training activities, providing facilities for workshops, courses and programmes that help develop the next generation of space professionals. Through ESA, Belgian partners support scientific discovery, technological innovation and the development of Europe’s space capabilities.
