The future of Galileo
Satellite navigation is the backbone of our interconnected world. It synchronises power grids, timestamps financial transactions, and enables transport on land, sea and in the air.
The European Space Agency (ESA) leads the design, development, qualification and research and development activities for the world-class EU navigation programmes Galileo and EGNOS. ESA is also shaping the future of satellite navigation through next generation systems and ambitious technology demonstrators that will integrate low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, optical technology and AI for centimetre-level accuracy and resilient positioning everywhere.
The Navigation Innovation Support Programme (NAVISP) funds cutting-edge technology, boosts industrial competitiveness, and develops alternative positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) solutions. ESA is also developing telecommunications and navigation services for on and around the Moon through Moonlight and NovaMoon. These services will support future lunar exploration and help prepare the way for missions through the Solar System.
ESA’s satellite navigation missions and programmes span the entire value chain, from building operational systems to R&D to support for industrialisation.
