Luca spacewalk for AMS / Live

ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano is taking part in a series of complex spacewalks to service the cosmic-particle-hunting Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. These so-called Extra Vehicular Activities are  expected to be the most challenging since work to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

It is the first time a European astronaut will take a leading role and the full spacewalk will be relayed live via satellite and streamed on ESA Web TV from 12:15 CET (11:15 GMT).

Luca and his partner NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan will exit the International Space Station airlock at around 13:05 CET (12:05 GMT).

As the lead spacewalker, known as ‘EV1’, Luca will wear a white spacesuit with red stripes while Andrew wears the white spacesuit with no stripes.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a sub-atomic particle detector that looks for dark matter, antimatter and measures cosmic rays - high energy particles that travel through space at close to the speed of light. But AMS was not designed for maintenance on orbit. Now, the repair of the AMS’ cooling system will ensure that it can continue to provide more data and more groundbreaking science.
