Luca spacewalk #3 for AMS - LIVE

Date: Mon, Dec 02, 2019 | 11:00 - 20:00 GMT | 12:00 - 21:00 CET

Type: ESA TV Live

Format: 16:9

On Monday 2 December, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano and NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan will venture beyond the International Space Station’s airlock for the third time as part of a complex series of spacewalks to service the Station’s cosmic ray detecting Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-02.
While every spacewalk (EVA) in the AMS-02 series holds its own set of challenges, this third EVA is particularly significant as it is when Luca and Drew will bring the new AMS-02 pump system out of the airlock and install it on AMS itself.
The spacewalk will start at around 12:50 CET (11:50 GMT) when Luca and Drew exit the Quest airlock, and is expected to take around seven and a half hours. Its completion will mark the conclusion of AMS maintenance, with one final spacewalk in the planning to check for any leaks and ensure the instrument is working as expected.
The full EVA will be relayed live via satellite and streamed on ESA Web TV from 12:15 CET (11:15 GMT). (Satellite signal up from 1100GMT)

As the lead spacewalker, known as ‘EV1’, Luca will wear a white spacesuit with red stripes while Andrew wears the white spacesuit with no stripes.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a sub-atomic particle detector that looks for dark matter, antimatter and measures cosmic rays - high energy particles that travel through space at close to the speed of light. But AMS was not designed for maintenance on orbit. Now, the repair of the AMS cooling system will ensure that it can continue to provide more data and more ground breaking science.
