Vega V16 launch live with SSMS and ESAIL

Date: Thu, Sep 03, 2020 | 01:15 - 03:15 GMT | 03:15 - 05:15 CEST

Type: ESA TV Live

Format: 16:9

Preparation for launch tonight (02-03 Sept) has resumed. Final confirmation is expected at L-4 hrs dependent on the availability of the Korean Jeju ground station which is subject to local typhoon conditions.

The Vega V16 launch, twice postponed from June, is the Vega return to flight. It is also a proof-of-concept flight with a new system for putting into orbit multiple small satellite payloads: the SSMS, developed by ESA. Among more than 50 satellites being carried into space will be ESAIL, a joint ESA/LuxSpace project to extend the monitoring of maritime traffic, as well as three CubeSats: SIMBA, Picasso and FSSCat which carries pioneering technology named Φ-sat-1.

When VV16 reaches space, the satellite payloads will be progressively released from the SSMS dispenser in a coordinated sequence at a Sun-synchronous orbit about 500 Km above Earth.

Launch is scheduled for 0151 GMT with separation of the payloads approximately 1 hour later.

As soon as possible after separation, highlights will be posted on the ESA TV FTP server:

The transmission will also be carried live on ESA Web TV
