    • Description

In preparation for his second mission to the International Space Station, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet is training to be ready for launch. His second six-month mission is called Alpha and will see Thomas launch as part Crew-2 on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft with NASA astronaut Megan Behnken and Shane Kimbrough and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide.

After the mission the crew will splash down in the Atlantic Ocean in their Dragon capsule. They need to practice basic water survival skills and getting out of the capsule as well as being lifted to safety. The training used an Orion spacecraft mockup, the vehicle that will take astronauts to the Moon later this decade. The training was held at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Facility at their Johnson Training Center in Houston, USA – the same place where astronauts practice spacewalks.
