New space adventure movie Wow! Message from Outer Space is set to thrill moviegoers – with ESA playing a supporting role.
Wow! Message from Outer Space is an exciting new space adventure that is certain to delight movie fans of all ages. Following its premiere in Munich at the start of December, the movie goes on general release on 14 December 2023 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The movie tells the story of two young space fans who team up to search for signals from aliens. When they pick up a message from space, nobody believes them. While trying to investigate further, they accidentally become stowaways on a rocket launched from the European Space Agency’s spaceport!
A thrill-packed adventure follows as the children tackle life in space, the mystery of those alien transmissions – and getting home safely.
The producers of Wow! Message from Outer Space asked ESA for a little help to ensure their story had a convincing space setting. ESA provided technical advice to help create convincing space and ground control scenes. The agency also provided authentic props, such as ESA-branded signs and ESA patches for the children’s space suits, plus space photos and video footage.
Bernd Schiller, the movie’s producer, commented on ESA’s supporting role in Wow! Message from Outer Space : “The cooperation with the European Space Agency was important for the production and marketing of our film on many levels. We are grateful to have even been given the opportunity to film on location at Europe’s spaceport in Kourou. The ESA team gave us great support!”
ESA’s Branding and Partnerships Office has seen increasing interest in ESA from movie production companies, who look to the agency for expertise and visuals that will add authenticity to the space scenes in their movies.
Emmet Fletcher, Head of ESA’s Branding and Partnerships Office reflected on the benefits of these cooperations: “ESA is fortunate to have a huge range of resources available to audiovisual creators. From unique filming locations and real-life props, through to expert advice and assistance, ESA is happy to help TV, movie and game producers add space authenticity to their stories. In return, the ESA brand can be seen by new audiences, which helps to boost awareness of our activities and sparks curiosity about space.”
