Simulation and Visualisation in Support of Concurrent Engineering (SIMVIS)
The SIMVIS study has been funded by the Technology Research Programme (TRP) of ESA. The contract has been performed by Vega GmbH (D) as the prime contractor and responsible for the software engineering, implementation and testing, and Astrium GmbH (D) as subcontractor, responsible for the system engineering and user requirements. It has recently been completed and the study results are available now. The outcome of this study was declared to be Operational Software, therefore the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of the software and all the simulation models are with ESA. As such, ESA makes this software available free-of-charge to all industry and research organisations of ESA member states.
SIMVIS Objectives
The main objective of the SIMVIS study has been to industrialise the PTB-based software used for the first few CDF studies and to improve it in the following areas:
  • Create a tool that can be used outside the CDF environment alone and which can support the concurrent engineering process in general.
  • Provide an easy way to setup an initial version of the simulator using a so-called Project Wizard.
  • Provide the integration to a concurrent design data model e.g. the one used in the Estec CDF, with automated updating of system design parameters.
  • Implement a system that can simplify any software maintenance and future developments by managing a catalogue of models in a structured way.
  • Provide a well-documented set of models to support the development of a simulator that is typical for an assessment study.
  • Provide a well documented set of library functions for use in the default models or in any user derived models.
SIMVIS architecture
SIMVIS Implementation
The SIMVIS infrastructure has been implemented using the Microsoft .NET technology and is running under Windows. The simulation models have been developed in C++ and are encapsulated in SMP2 compatible models. SMP2 is supported by the SIMVIS designer, e.g. to provide a code generator to create all SMP2 wrapper code and templates for any newly defined simulation models. The simulator architecture is defined in the SIMVIS assembly, which is based on the SMP2 assembly. This assembly and all models in this assembly are executed in the SIMSAT simulation kernel. During runtime, the OpenIGS software can be used to provide a 3D visualisation of the spacecraft and its environment. As part of the SIMVIS development, a simulation workbook model has been defined, which could eventually be integrated in the CFD workbook model based on XL spreadsheets. SIMVIS can create an initial simulator using the so-called Wizard. This Wizard will take the information out of the Simulation workbook model and compile an initial version of the simulator. The SIMVIS Designer can update any workbook parameters in case the any of the workbook parameters changes.
