N° 10–2022: Invitation to media: join a Q&A session with experts on Europe’s contribution to the Artemis lunar mission
23 March 2022
Media representatives are invited to join a virtual Q&A session on Monday 28 March, 13:30 BST/14.30 CEST with experts on the European contribution to the Artemis mission, the European Service Module (ESM) and the Orion spacecraft.
Orion is designed to send astronauts farther into space than ever before, beyond the Moon to asteroids and even Mars.
ESA has contracted and is overseeing the development of the European Service Module, that provides air, electricity and propulsion. Much like a train engine pulls passenger carriages and supplies power, the European Service Module will power the Orion Crew Module to its destination and back to Earth.
ESA is supplying the European Service Module in collaboration with its prime contractor Airbus. This is the only spacecraft presently capable of crewed spaceflight to, and high-speed Earth reentry from, the vicinity of the Moon.
NASA will set an official target launch date after a successful ‘wet dress rehearsal’ test – one of the final tests before launch involving fuel loaded into the rocket – currently planned for 1 – 3 April, 2022.
Program
14:30 CEST Short introduction of the speakers and the European contribution to Artemis
14:45 CEST Q&A
15:30 CEST End of programme
A recording will be available afterwards.
Participants
Philippe Deloo, ESA’S Orion Project Manager
Didier Radola, Airbus ESM Orion Programme Manager

About the European Space Agency
The European Space Agency (ESA) provides Europe’s gateway to space.
ESA is an intergovernmental organisation, created in 1975, with the mission to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
ESA has 22 Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members.
ESA has established formal cooperation with five Member States of the EU. Canada takes part in some ESA programmes under a Cooperation Agreement.
By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, ESA can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. It is working in particular with the EU on implementing the Galileo and Copernicus programmes as well as with Eumetsat for the development of meteorological missions.
