The European Space Agency (ESA) has released Earth Virtual Expert (EVE), a platform powered with Artificial Intelligence (AI), to make Earth observation information more accessible and easier to understand.
EarthCARE’s view of volcanic plume boosts air safety
When Anak Krakatau erupted a few weeks ago, the European Space Agency’s EarthCARE satellite, orbiting above, captured vertical profiles of different constituents within the volcanic plume. Designed primarily to advance our understanding of how clouds and aerosols influence Earth’s climate, here EarthCARE also provided valuable information to support safe air travel.
Faster-flowing glaciers fuel decades of polar ice loss
The longest satellite data record of ice-sheet change ever assembled has revealed that Greenland and Antarctica have lost a staggering 11 trillion tonnes of ice since the 1970s, driving global sea level up by more than three centimetres. However, the new findings also highlight that the story is not simply one of ice melting at the surface. The glaciers that drain these vast ice sheets are also flowing faster, channelling enormous quantities of ice directly into the ocean.
The European Space Agency’s FLEX Earth Explorer satellite and the Copernicus Sentinel-3C satellite have been launched together aboard a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, marking a new milestone in Europe’s Earth Observation Programmes.
When Anak Krakatau erupted earlier this month, the European Space Agency’s EarthCARE satellite, orbiting above, captured vertical profiles of different constituents within the volcanic plume.
N° 35-2026: Call for interest: media programme for FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C launch at Europe’s Spaceport
Media representatives are invited to express their interest in attending the media programme at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana for the launch of the FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C satellites on a Vega-C rocket (flight VV30). Liftoff is expected to take place on 14 September 2026 (22:21 local time, 03.21 CEST on 15 September).
