2004: On 18 January 2004, the OMEGA instrument on ESA's Mars Express mapped the South polar cap of the Red Planet.
OMEGA, the combined camera and infrared spectrometer, revealed the presence of water ice and carbon dioxide ice for the first time.

1969: On 15 January 1969, the first docking of two manned spacecraft took place between the Soviet Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5. The spacecraft formed what was termed 'the world's first space station' with a crew of four on board.
