Sustainability in Earth's orbit
Maintaining safe and secure operations for current and future missions, mitigating the problem of space debris and working towards a circular economy in space
Sustainability on the Moon and in deep space
Using resources responsibly, preventing contamination and debris, and managing waste in exploration missions
Reporting and resources
ESA's sustainability reports go beyond tracking progress and challenges – they spotlight the achievements driving sustainability forward.

Statement for a Responsible Space Sector
Working together towards a more socially and environmentally responsible management of all activities within the space sector.
ESA’s Zero Debris approach
Space debris is defined as “All non-functional, human-made objects, including no longer functioning spacecraft or fragments of them, in orbit or reentering Earth's atmosphere.”Since the start of the space age ...
ESA’s Climate Change Initiative
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change leads international efforts to combat climate change and limit global temperature rise to less 2°C above what it was in pre-industrial times, as set out in the Paris Agreement. Robust scientific evidence of change is fundamental this challenging task.
ESA’s double materiality matrix
Every few years, ESA undergoes a materiality assessment to identify its top sustainability issues and refine its goals.
Terrae Novae: Europe's exploration vision
ESA’s Terrae Novae exploration programme is leading Europe’s human journey into the Solar System using robots as precursors and scouts. Exploring space is about travelling farther and coming back with new experiences and knowledge to help us on Earth. Humankind will benefit from the new discoveries, ambitions, science, inspiration and challenges.

3D-printed metal: unlocking crew autonomy
When it comes to the future of human exploration, 3D printing may hold the key to crew autonomy in areas ranging from maintenance to medicine. On long-duration missions far from Earth, where carrying large numbers of spare parts is impractical and resupply may be impossible, onboard manufacturing offers a promising solution.ESA's Metal 3D Printer Technology Demonstrator, the first metal 3D printer in orbit, was launched to the International Space Station in 2024. The printer has now produced its fifth sample, which was recently retrieved by ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot during the εpsilon mission.
