EGT, NGT or JPP? What’s right for me?
Are you interested in starting your career at the European Space Agency but unsure which programme matches your profile? With multiple early-career opportunities opening at different times of the year, here is a quick explainer to help you choose the best fit for you.
This guide explains the differences between three programmes:
- ESA Graduate Trainee Programme (EGT)
- National Graduate Trainee Programmes (NGT)
- Junior Professional Programme (JPP)
Understanding how they differ will help you focus on the opportunities that truly fit your background.
Three programmes, three distinct profiles
1. ESA Graduate Trainee Programme (EGT) - the classic entry point for graduates
The ESA Graduate Trainee Programme is designed for recent university graduates who are ready to take their first major professional step.
We recruit EGTs who:
- Recently completed a Master’s degree. Candidates are often in their final year of studies when they apply
- Have up to one year’s professional experience
- Want exposure to real ESA projects
- Are looking for a one- or two-year traineeship experience
The EGT campaign typically launches around February each year.
2. National Graduate Trainee Programme (NGT) - nationally sponsored opportunities for graduates
The National Graduate Trainee Programme is ESA's newest entry-level programme, and closely mirrors the EGT Programme in most aspects - except the eligibility criteria.
Key characteristics of NGT positions:
- Sponsored by individual Member States who provide the funding for these positions through bilateral partnership agreements with ESA.
- Open to citizens and permanent residents of the sponsoring country (permanent residents must have citizenship of an ESA Member State, Associate Member, European Cooperating State or Canada)
- Only certain countries sponsor NGT opportunities - check this link for more details.
In other words, you may qualify for NGT roles if your country sponsors the position(s).
For 2026, the first NGT opportunities will open in April and May.
3. Junior Professional Programme (JPP) – for early-career professionals
The Junior Professional Programme is not a traineeship, but a career development entry scheme for candidates who already have relevant work experience.
It suits professionals who:
- Have up to three years of post-graduation experience
- Seek a structured long-term career path at ESA
- Are ready for higher levels of responsibility
- Want to contribute as established professionals
JPP vacancies are generally published between April and June. Subscribe to Careers news to be notified when the 2026 JPP positions open.
Application timing matters
While exact dates may vary each year, campaigns typically follow this pattern:
- February → ESA Graduate Trainee Programme (EGT)
- April-June → Junior Professional Programme (JPP)
- Any time in the year → National Graduate Trainee Programme (NGT)
Because JPP and some NGT vacancies will appear around the same time in 2026, carefully reviewing requirements is essential.
Key features of the three programmes:
How to stay informed and apply
All applications must be submitted through ESA’s official jobs portal.
To avoid missing opportunities:
- Create your candidate profile early
- Upload a tailored CV and motivation letter
- Activate job alerts
- Review eligibility criteria carefully
Given the competitiveness of ESA programmes, preparation and timing are key.
Start your ESA career with confidence
Each programme plays a distinct role in supporting early careers at ESA. The EGT acts as a launchpad for new graduates taking their first steps into the space sector, while the NGT offers a similar graduate-level pathway but is tied to national sponsorship and therefore depends on specific nationality requirements. The JPP, in contrast, is designed for early-career professionals who already have some experience and are ready to progress to a more advanced stage of responsibility within ESA.
Ultimately, your path into the space sector begins with selecting the programme that aligns with your experience and aspirations. ESA also offers other opportunities such as student internships, research fellowships and co-funded research. To see which programme is the best fit for you, have a look at this page.
