Proba-V is a miniaturised ESA satellite tasked with a full-scale mission: to map land cover and vegetation growth across the entire planet every two days.

Launch date:	6/7 May 2013 (04:06:31 CEST 7 May; 23:06:31 local time 6 May)
Mass:	140 kg
Orbit:	Sun-synchronous polar orbit, 820 km altitude, crossing the equator every morning between 10:30 and 11:00 local time
Instrument:	New version of the Vegetation imager previously flown on the Spot satellites
Guest technology payloads:	Gallium nitride amplifier incorporated in communication subsystem; Energetic Particle Telescope; SATRAM radiation monitor, ADS-B aircraft signal detector; fibre optic photonics experiment
Prime contractor:	QinetiQ Space Belgium
Payload developer:	OIP Sensor Systems
Ground segment:	Satellite’s mission control centre in Redu, Belgium complemented by a ground station for data reception, and a processing and archiving centre at VITO in Belgium. The exploitation phase of Proba-V will be managed by ESA from ESRIN, ESA’s Earth observation centre in Italy.

V for Vegetation

This mission is extending the data set of the long-established Vegetation instrument, flown as a secondary payload aboard France’s Spot-4 and Spot-5 satellites launched in 1998 and 2002 respectively. The latter satellite’s Vegetation instrument remains operational to this day.

Serving science

Click here for the latest information on Proba-V.The Spot Vegetation dataset has close to 10 000 registered users around the globe and has contributed to hundreds of scientific papers over 15 years. But with further Spot satellites lacking the capacity to carry Vegetation instruments, Proba-V has been designed to meet the future needs of this group.

Proba-V: Fitting the world in a box

Click here for the latest information on Proba-V.Engineered to fly on a Spot satellite platform the size of a van, the original 130 kg Vegetation instrument built for Spot was in fact much bulkier than the entire Proba platform. Fitting within the available space and mass budget of Proba meant shrinking the design down significantly. This miniaturisation process meant harnessing all the technological advances that had taken place since the instrument was first designed in the early 1990s.

ESA ESEC, the European Space Security and Education Centre, at Redu in Belgium, is a centre of excellence for space cyber security services, home to ESA's Proba mission control centres, the Space Weather Data Centre, the ESA Education Training Centre (hosting permanent facilities dedicated to the training of school teachers and university students within the framework of the ESA Education programme) as well as part of ESA’s ground station network.
