ESA began the Eurobot programme in 2002, in support of International Space Station spacewalks and future exploration. As a crew assistant, Eurobot will help the astronauts to use their EVA time more effectively.

At the end of 2004 it was decided to build the first fully functional prototype – the Eurobot Wet Model – for testing under neutral buoyancy conditions.

In 2008 ESA added a new phase – the Eurobot Ground Prototype (EGP) – to expand beyond the Space Station. EGP addresses the use of robotics to prepare for the arrival of astronauts on exploration missions to the Moon and Mars.

The project conducted an extensive test campaign to demonstrate robotic technologies for exploration and to gain experience in robotic tasks in preparation for astronaut arrival and for human-to-robot joint activities.
