Dr. Marietta Benkö is an independent legal consultant in the field of aviation and space law, working as a scholar and practitioner since 1978 and lecturing worldwide.
From 1978-2013 Dr. Benkö worked as an attorney-at-law (Rechtsanwältin) in Cologne. From 1979-2013 she served as the legal adviser to the German Delegation in the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) on behalf of the German Office for Foreign Affairs. She was thereby actively involved in the elaboration and negotiation of all legal instruments, which had been adopted by the Committee during that time. Since 2014 she is now a representative of the International Institute of Space Law at the UNCOPUOS Legal Subcommittee.
As a host and independent peer reviewer in the field of air and space law she works for the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, promoting academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.
She is life member of the International Academy of Astronautics and member of the International Institute of Space Law.
In 1996 she was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande) by the German President of State for her professional achievements in the UN and for her participation in the elaboration of legal principles relating to the use of nuclear power sources in outer space. She was also honoured for teaching space law & policy at Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Faculty of Aerospace Engineering) and for her work as an author and editor of numerous publications in the field of air and space law.
In 2013 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Institute of Space Law.
