Training

The SME Office intends to organise dedicated training for SMEs in the near future. This section will be updated as new training slots become available.

Current training opportunities

On 8-9 February, training on the ESA Costing Software (ECOS) version 5.2, will be given at ESTEC, Noordwijk. Version 5.2 contains major new features to speed up the elaboration and presentation of a company’s financial proposals and to ease the management of sub-contractors. A full description of the training is available at: http://emits.sso.esa.int/emits-doc/ESTEC/ECOS/ECOS5.2_training_February2017.pdf

TRAINING MATERIALS

ESA provides a wide range of training materials for different subject areas. A list of resources of interest to SMEs is provided below:

ECSS
The European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) is an initiative established to develop a coherent, single set of user-friendly standards for use in all European space activities. To train potential users in applying ECSS standards in space projects, or tailor these standards for their specific needs, ESA’s Requirements and Standards division has prepared a wide range of training materials, covering topics such as “System Engineering Standards”, “Space Engineering Mechanisms”, “Quality Assurance” and many more. The materials can be accessed here.

ECSS self-training presentations with audio such as “An introduction into the ECSS standardization system and its implementation in the ECSS member's programmes” can be downloaded here.

Visit the ESA training calendar for ECSS training to find out about forthcoming training sessions. Participation can be requested via the respective National Space Authority or Office.

Best Practices
ESA has a unique set of rules known as the Best Practices “For the selection of subcontractors by Prime Contractors in the frame of ESA’s major procurements” ref. ESA/IPC(2012)65,rev.2. This Code of Best Practices provides a minimum set of requirements to be implemented by a Prime Contractor or Subcontractor during the selection of subcontractors aiming at guaranteeing fair and equal treatment of all potential tenderers.

A detailed explanation of ESA’s Best Practices is available here.

The ESA Ombudsman
The ESA Industrial Ombudsman plays an essential role in the implementation of best practices for the 'Selection of Subcontractors by Prime Contractors in the Frame of ESA's Major Procurements'.

An introductory video about the role of the Ombudsman can be found here.

ESA IT tools
esa-star
“esa-star” – ESA’s online System for Tendering And Registration – is the new default electronic Tendering interface for ESA and its external partners. For doing business with ESA a registration with esa-star is necessary. Visit this website with e-tendering tutorials to find out more about the new tool and its features.

esa-star complements ESA’s existing system for the publication of tender-related information, EMITS. For now, both systems will be used – EMITS for processing outbound tendering information and esa-star for inbound information.

Emits
EMITS is the system used by the Agency for publishing Invitations To Tender (ITTs) and information and reference material about the ESA procurement process. An online user manual is available here.

esa-p
esa-p is the supplier portal for ESA’s contractual partners. It provides controlled access and visibility on ESA contracts (contractual, invoicing and payment information) to Prime- and Sub-contractors directly paid by ESA. It also features submission and approval of electronic invoices and Milestone Achievement Certificates.

A range of help documentation, including a taped online Webinar, is available here.

ESA Training and Technical manuals
Training materials published by ESA on its “Spacebooks online” page are available here
