The General Studies Programme has been investigating ways to model and forecast the European space sector for future planning. With the support of the prime contractor DKE Aerospace Swiss GmbH that executed the study, new estimates of the (near- and mid-term) evolution of the European space sector are now possible, both from the supply and the demand sides, together with the identification of possible actions to foster the European space industry competitiveness.

The study covers all ESA Member States and addresses funding (institutional, commercial) schemes, industry and its evolution (manpower, productivity, profitability, structure) and the main activity domains, giving due consideration to the circumstances surrounding the space sector activities (economic cycles, demographics, ecological change).

Other factors such like dual-use synergies, PPP schemes and downstream demand were taken into account analyzing their specific impact on the space sector. The team has developed a sophisticated dynamics models to derive forecasts based on scenario techniques and identifying the critical impacts, generating the corresponding simulations for the key parameters. In addition, DKE Aerospace Swiss GmbH has prepared reasoned proposals and recommendations to better adjust to the situations considered, in line with Agenda 2015.
