Rendezvous and docking in space is quite common nowadays up into Low Earth Orbit. It is a totally different story once into remote Mars orbit after grapping rock samples on the surface of Mars or after a crew spending some time there. Requirements are as stringent in terms of guidance, navigation and control over all kind of ranges (tens of kilometres down to centimetres) as in terms of mechanisms and this has to be investigated at a system level as well.
