From 11–13 June, a livestream training event on ECSS quality standards for SMEs will offer six new standardisation courses.

All sessions will be livestreamed at: https://livestream.com/ESA/ECSSTraining and can be replayed.

The table below offers further information on course contents and livestream times.

11 June

ECSS - E-32 Structural

Covers detailed aspects on design (metallic and composites panels, struts, etc, including materials, materials allowable, processes and manufacturing aspects), advanced materials applications, loads analysis, structural dynamics, shocks, pressurized tanks and systems, stable structures, damage tolerance and fracture control implementation (including required hardware inspections and dedicated testing), testing (sinus, random, including primary and secondary notchings, static, modal, acoustics), mechanical interfaces (bolted, bonded joints), thermo-elastic effects, optical assemblies, iso-static mounts, micro-gravity disturbances, structural verification.

Livestream, 9:00–12:30
11 June

ECSS - E-31 Thermal

Presents the basics of the ECSS-E-ST-31C Standard “Space Engineering Thermal Control General Requirements” and its applicability to ESA space activities. It covers the establishment of technical and reporting requirements, the impact of the TCS (Thermal Control Subsystem) throughout a project lifecycle. The course provides the terms and definitions, the Technical Requirements (mission, performance, design, verification), and the documentation requirements.

Livestream, 13:30–17:00
12 June

ECSS - E-20 Electric Electronics

Covers ECSS E-ST-20-C Standard, the capability to assess such as RFDs or RFWs with proper knowledge of underlying rationale

Livestream, 9:00–12:30
12 June

ECSS - E-33 Mechanisms

Introduction to spacecraft mechanisms via ECSS-E-ST-33-01C. The course covers design and verification rules explained through implementation examples and lessons learned. For example, some design guidelines for the development of spacecraft mechanisms, such as the redundancy concepts and the material selection. The course addresses an introduction to ball bearing sizing and lubricant selection, some guidelines for the sizing of actuation force / torque and for the verification of requirements through analysis and test.

Livestream, 13:30–17:00
13 June

ECSS - E-60 Control Engineering

The engineering Standards in the "E-60" family address the Control Engineering and AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Systems) engineering, covering all development phases including requirements definition, analysis, design, production, verification and validation, transfer, operations and maintenance. The ECSS-E60 branch was conceived as engineering standards and handbooks for all systems involving control. Consequently, high level documents are generic (e.g. control engineering handbook, control performance standard). Lower level documents are specific to AOCS (e.g. AOCS requirements, Star sensors).

Livestream, 9:00–2:30
13 June

ECSS - E-50 Communications

The engineering Standards in the "50" family address the communications links used during either spacecraft operations (i.e. space-to-ground and space-to-space or during spacecraft assembly, integration and test, and operational phases. The course addresses the first set of defined or adopted standards for Space Data Links focusing on the lowest layers of the OSI model including Psychical and Data Link Layer.

Note that the course does not cover the following on-board standards - part of the E-50 family (see https://ecss.nl/standards/ecss-standards-on-line/active-standards/engineering/ ) - addressing internal communications within the spacecraft:

ECSS-E-ST-50-12C – SpaceWire – Links, nodes, routers and networks (31 July 2008)

ECSS-E-ST-50-13C – Interface and communication protocol for MIL-STD-1553B data bus onboard spacecraft (15 November 2008)

ECSS-E-ST-50-14C – Spacecraft discrete interfaces (31 July 2008) ECSS-E-ST-50-15C – CANbus extension protocol (1 May 2015)

ECSS-E-ST-50-51C – SpaceWire protocol identification (5 February 2010)

ECSS-E-ST-50-52C – SpaceWire – Remote memory access protocol (5 February 2010)

ECSS-E-ST-50-53C – SpaceWire – CCSDS packet transfer protocol (5 February 2010)

Livestream, 13:30–17:00

Note: All times given are CEST.

Participants are advised to download the training materials pertaining to the individual modules before attending the sessions at: http://ecss.nl/ecss-training-material-for-download/ (log-in/registration to the page is required).

The ECSS livestream is organised by the SME Office as part of its SME Initiative, in collaboration with the ESA Requirements, Standards and Engineering Knowledge Office, which also organises multiple on-site training sessions throughout the year, see here.

If you have questions about the livestream, please contact the SME Office at sme-office@esa.int
