ESA astronaut Timothy Peake ISS mission - pre-launch coverage CHANGE TO 14 DEC FEED

British ESA astronaut Tim Peake will be launched to the International Space Station ISS, from Baikonur in Kazakhstan on board a Russian Soyuz vehicle on 15th December at 17h03 Baikonur (11h03 GMT).

He is the first Briton to be selected as a member of ESA’s European Astronaut Corps. With a background in flight dynamics, he serves in the British Airforce as flight commander, helicopter instructor and test pilot. He also has close ties with the UK Space Agency, working on the development of its microgravity research programme.

Named after Isaac Newton’s text Naturalis Principia Mathematica, Tim’s “Principia” mission will be the eighth ESA long-duration mission to the International Space Station. He will spend five months on orbit carrying out an intensive schedule of european and international experiments, in addition to numerous educational activities.

During the period between now and launch, in addition to the TV Exchanges listed separately; we will post highlights of key events on the ESA TV ftp server and the full feeds will be carried on London ends as follows:

Fri 20 Nov:           final exams at Star City/GCTC for prime and back-up crew-members 19th/20th Nov (1300GMT)

Mon 23 Nov:         State commission readiness review at Star City/press conference/Kremlin visit (1730GMT)

Mon 30 Nov:         farewell breakfast at Star City and departure from Chkalovsky airport (1300GMT)

Weds 9 Dec:        feed postponed to Dec 10

Thurs Dec 10:      new feed 1200-1330GMT arrival at Baikonur/flag raising/1st fit-check/ceremonial activities/media day now combined with 2nd fit-check and Soyuz encapsulation

Fri 11 Dec:          feed cancelled - content now on Dec 10 as above

Sun 13 Dec:          Soyuz mating to launcher/roll-out to pad and rotation/soundbites with management (1300GMT)

Mon 14 Dec:          final State Commission sign-off for launch/crew news conference (1300GMT)

The times shown are feed start times and for London end users feeds may vary from 30' to 1.5hrs. Highlights files should be available on the ESA TV ftp server within 2 hours.

Launch is scheduled Tues 15 Dec. It will be subject of another mailing but for initial information:

  • Launch: 1103 GMT. Coverage starts 1000 GMT/ends 1145 GMT
  • Docking: 1723 GMT. Coverage starts 1700 GMT/ends 1730 GMT
  • Hatch opening and family event with crew: 1900 GMT. Coverage starts 1845 GMT/ends 1945 GMT.
